1. General information
The general objective of the subject is to introduce students to the analysis of cultural phenomena, emphasizing two aspects: on the one hand, the specificity of the philosophical analysis of culture, as well as the continuity of this analysis with that offered by other disciplines such as history, sociology or politics. On the other hand, in the plurality of such cultural phenomena, favouring the understanding of an intercultural and equal space.
The approach and objective of the subject are aligned with the following SDGs: 4.5, 10, 16 and 17.
2. Learning results
In order to pass this subject, the students shall demonstrate they has acquired the following results:
Knows the main milestones and contributions that shape culture in its different historical stages.
Knows and handles the fundamental methods of study for the analysis of culture
Is able to reflect philosophically and critically from an intercultural perspective on diverse social and cultural manifestations
Is able to make justified comparative analyses in the face of cultural oppositions or contradictions.
3. Syllabus
1. The Invention of Culture in German Idealism.
2. Cultural studies, or culture as ideology.
3. Current Problems of the Philosophy of Culture.
4. Subcultures and the problem of orientalism.
5. Animal cultures and anthropological difference.
6. Wolf-children, apes and the human in conditional.
4. Academic activities
The subject will be taught under the methodological orientation promoted by the European Higher Education Space. Text to read, summarize and discuss will be proposed and each student will produce and present a tutored personal paper based on the indications established at the beginning of the term.
In class, the teacher will explain the most important concepts and theses of the program. Students should complement the explanations with the readings recommended in the bibliography. Thus, the academic activities will consist of 1. theoretical classes, 2. practical classes, 3. personal work and study, and 4. tests or assessment activities.
5. Assessment system
I. FIRST CALL
GLOBAL ASSESSMENT
The assessment will be global and will consist of two parts:
1. A written paper or oral presentation on a required reading book (25% of the final grade)
Assessment criteria: Knowledge and handling of the fundamental contents of the syllabus and of the primary and secondary bibliography , ability to highlight the central ideas, structure their development and relate one concept to others.
Ability to relate the contents of the subject with the student´s own perspective, adequate argumentation and orderly exposition.
2. A final exam (75% of the final grade)
Assessment criteria : It will be assessed that students demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the fundamental contents of the syllabus; that they know how to highlight the central ideas, structure their answer and relate some concepts with others; that they express themselves with accuracy and property; and that they handle with rigor the language that is proper of the discipline.

Global assessment test identical to the previous one.
